Back in the 1990s, a popular way of learning in Vietnamese schools was rote learning. Mặc dù một số giáo viên của tôi áp dụng các phương pháp đổi mới, nhưng không có nhiều sự khác biệt trong cách truyền đạt kiến thức cho chúng tôi. Chúng tôi không được khuyến khích tham gia tích cực vào các bài học vì giáo viên nói gần như mọi lúc. Theo như tôi nhớ, chương trình giảng dạy chủ yếu tập trung vào các môn học thuật như toán và văn học, trong khi các kỹ năng mềm và một số môn như thể dục hoặc âm nhạc nhận được rất ít sự quan tâm. Với hướng dẫn lấy giáo viên làm trung tâm, thiếu sự tham gia của học sinh và sự quan tâm không đồng đều đến các môn học không phải học thuật, học sinh đã học rất chăm chỉ và vẫn đạt được thành công lớn. Mặc dù một số học sinh vẫn không tham gia vào các lớp học ngày nay, nhưng cá nhân tôi tin rằng nền giáo dục Việt Nam đang thay đổi. Tôi đã thấy nhiều giáo viên sử dụng các phương pháp học tập tương tác và điều tôi ấn tượng nhất là giáo viên chú ý nhiều hơn đến việc phát triển các kỹ năng của thế kỷ 21, mặc dù các lớp học vẫn còn lớn và các nguồn lực vẫn còn hạn chế.
