We use reported speech to report what someone said. We can use that to introduce reported speech, but we can omit that. When we change direct speech to reported speech: - we change verb tenses when the introductory verb (say, tell, ask, etc.) is in a past tense. Kim told me, “I’m interested in vertical farming” Kim told me (that) she was interested in vertical farming. - we change pronouns/possessive adjectives according to the context. He said, “Good time management skills help me work smarter.” He said (that) good time management skills helped him work smarter. - we change time words/phrases and other expressions according to the context. She said to me, “I’m studying English now.” She said to me (that) she was studying English then. |

When we change direct questions to reported questions: - we usually use ask to introduce reported questions. - we change the word order from the question form to the statement form. - we change verb tenses, pronouns/possessive adjectives, time words/phrases and other expressions. Yes-No questions: We use if or whether to introduce reported questions. “Do you want the job?” she asked me. -> She asked me if/whether I wanted the job. Wh- questions: We use the same question words in direct questions to introduce reported questions. “What are your strengths?” the careers advisor asked me.
