Dr. McQueen: Thank you for having me.
Host: So in your office, you deal with a lot of teens and their parents, what do you think is the most common problem?
Dr. McQueen: Well, the biggest problem isn't teenage body image or stress about school work, but actually its relationships with other family members.
Host: What types of things do you think cause that?
Dr. McQueen: There are a lot of reasons, such as chores, studying pocket money and spending time on social media. However, most of these problems come from the generation gap between teens and their parents,
Host: Really? And what causes the generation gap?
Dr. McQueen: Well, when parents were teens, their world was completely different from that of today's teens. For example, today's teens can't live without smartphones or the internet, but their parents can. The two generations have different viewpoints on today's world, so it's difficult for them to understand each other.
Host: Ah, I see that’s why a lot of teens find it difficult to follow the rules their parents set exactly.
Dr. McQueen: Teens often feel their parents are too strict, and parents feel like their children are always breaking the rules. If teens understood why the rules are there, they would be happy to follow them.
Host: How can parents and teens learn to understand one another better?
Dr. McQueen: I'd suggest making time to do fun activities together. Parents can chat to their teens about their hobbies and listen to their opinions. It's important that parents respect their children's personal time, too.
