This week, 4Teen has opened a forum for friends around the world to share how to live an independent life.

[Julia, American grade 11 student]

An independent person knows how to prioritize the work. I am an early bird, so I always start my day with a cup of coffee writing my bucket list. Completing a daily to-do list helps me keep track with every task I have to finish in the whole day. From the list, I can also prioritize the most important and urgent work to finish first.

[Caylee, African grade 11 student]

Well I guess that getting around on my own helps me become more independent. When I was a primary pupil, I had to have my mom be my alarm clock to get to school on time. However, I don't depend on any others to go to places and take responsibility for being late. This makes me more mature and self-reliant.

[Alisa, American grade 11 student]

I think independent people are good at controlling their emotions. Life always has ups and downs. Don't let yourself be a victim of those emotional ups and downs. For example, I learn how to cope with loneliness and get over stress.

[George, French grade 11 student]

To live independently, I learn to have good interpersonal communication skills. This helps me communicate effectively and get along well with other people.

[Helena, Australian grade 11 student]

Being a planner is a better choice than a procrastinator. Procrastination used to get me stuck and struggled to meet deadlines. One day, I tried making a careful plan and setting a specific goal for my literature research - a task I'm not really keen on. It's a bit time-consuming in the beginning, but I accomplished my research within the deadline and surprisingly got 9.5 out of 10.
