At the age of seventeen, Alex Chacón set off from his home in El Paso, Texas and went for a motorbike ride. Alex's thirty-day tour of the USA took in California, Washington and Florida and gave Alex an aim in life: to travel the world on his motorbike.

Although Alex usually travels alone, he has shared his experiences on his blog. While travelling, Alex videos himself doing all sorts of activities against breathtaking backgrounds of remote jungles, deserts and mountains. On one trip, he filmed himself by moving in a 360° circle so that all the famous landmarks would be included.

During Alex's motorcycle expeditions, he regularly stops to take part in volunteering projects at orphanages that he comes across on his route. Furthermore, he uses his blog to raise donations for orphans.

Alex is now planning to cross Africa, Europe and Asia. It seems that by the 5 time he's thirty, Alex will have ridden his bike across most of the planet!

Dutch actress Manon Ossevoort has dreamed of travelling from Europe across Africa to the South Pole for years, and she chose a slow form of transport: a tractor. Manon only averaged 5 km/h as she drove, but that allowed her to get to know the hospitable people in villages where she stopped over for the night. She would explain why she was going to the South Pole and ask people to follow her blog and write down their own dreams. She promised to build a snowman when she arrived at her destination and leave all their dreams inside it. The idea was popular and Manon received thousands of dreams on pieces of paper and in emails. Finally, on 9 December 2014, Manon's dream came true, and she pulled up in a big red tractor at the South Pole. She then built a snowman and left a time capsule inside it with all the dreams she had collected. Manon explained on her blog that when the time capsule is opened in eighty years' time, future generations will be able to read something about our lives and our hopes for the future.

Have you ever travelled with no luggage? That was the question Rolf Potts aimed to answer on the 'no-baggage challenge'. However, the task wasn't simply a question of going off for a week to soak up the sun on a beach. Rolf had to travel 50,000 km by plane and get around eleven countries in 42 days with just the things he could carry in his pockets. Would he be able to do it?

Rolf was certainly well qualified enough to try. He was an experienced traveller who wrote a blog about budget travel. Now he planned to update it with regular reports about travelling extremely light.

His first 'no-baggage challenge' entry listed the items he took with him: a toothbrush and toothpaste, a small bottle of soap, a mobile phone and charger, deodorant, sunglasses, a passport, cash and a credit card. His second entry explained that he had got into the habit of washing his clothes before going to bed during his trips. By the third entry, he was really enjoying luggage-free travel.

Potts said that he would never pack any 'just in case' items again, because the imagined situations that they were packed for would never happen.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about our stay at your youth hostel from 14-16 May.

I reserved a room for four with a shower room, and I received confirmation of the booking. However, when we arrived, the receptionist maintained there was no record of my reservation. I produced my confirmation slip, but she just said that 'something must have been wrong with the website that day'.

We were given beds in a fourteen-person room with ten other people. There was one bathroom for all of us, which was dirty with no toilet paper. The receptionist took no notice of our complaints. Then we were supplied with no sheets on the beds! Eventually, we found some sheets and cleaned the bathrooms ourselves. There was no apology at any point.

I feel strongly that we were treated very poorly. Firstly, I suggest that your online booking system be reviewed. Secondly, your staff should be trained to be more welcoming, and more helpful when problems arise. And finally, I request that there be sufficient bed linen, so that other guests are not inconvenienced as we were.

I feel we deserve some compensation and I look forward to hearing from you.

The rise of Airbnb

In 2007, design graduates, Joe Gebbie and Brian Chesky, were struggling to pay the rent for their San Francisco apartment. Hearing that there was a conference coming to town and there were no hotel rooms available, they created the website airbedandbreakfast.com where they advertised three airbeds in their home at $80 each a night, breakfast included. Only six days later, they had three guests sleeping on their floor. They knew immediately that this was the start of something big.

Being budding entrepreneurs, the pair decided to take their idea further. They enlisted Gebbie's former flatmate, Nathan Blecharczyk, a computer science graduate, to develop their website. Their idea was to target conferences and festivals across the USA, getting local people to list their rooms and travellers to book them. The new website was completed just in time for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, at which Barack Obama was due to speak in front of 80,000 people. Within a week, they had 800 listings, an achievement which dealt in part with the shortage of hotel rooms, but did not solve their financial problems, as the site was not making any money.

The team decided that they would have to handle payment for the bookings. They began to charge three per cent to the host and between six and twelve per cent to the traveller, depending on the price of the booking. Meanwhile, investors had started showing interest in the company. By April 2009, when larger investments began to arrive, they moved the company out of their flat into a new state-of-the-art office and hired more staff.

Since then Airbnb has gone from strength to strength. The company now has over 1.5 million listings in 34,000 cities in 190 countries, and is rumoured to be worth around $20 billion.

6. Be aware of your surroundings: Although traveling gives you opportunities to meet new people and learn about their cultures, always look out for trouble. If someone near you is acting strange, leave the area immediately.

Three years ago, I went to Vietnam with my dad and my younger brother, Eddie. While we were there, we visited a place called Black Lady Mountain (Núi Bà Den). It was hot and humid, and I was a little angry because I hate walking.

The mountain didn't look so big from far away, but when we got nearer, I could see it was actually huge. When we got there, I was overjoyed to see there was a cable car. I wasn't happy for long though, because my dad said we had to walk up the steps. He said that "it builds character" and that it was good for us to experience a nature walk.

We saw lots of small animals and unusual plants, and I realized my dad was right. Even though we were exhausted by the time we got to the top, it felt great being outside in the fresh air. We spent some time at the beautiful temple on the top of the mountain, and the view of the landscape below us was spectacular. There were monkeys everywhere, and they weren't scared of people at all. One of them stole a visitor's sandwich and ran away. It was hilarious.

To get down the mountain, we had to take a really long slide, like at an amusement park. I sat with Eddie on a small cart, and we flew down the slide to the bottom. Eddie was terrified and screamed so loudly that my dad thought he hurt himself. Anyway, I thought it was awesome and really wanted another turn.

It was a wonderful experience, and I would definitely like to visit the mountain again. Next time, however, I’d like to take the cable car or go on a day that is a bit cooler.

A. Crocosaurus Cove, Australia

If you think adventure is synonymous with wild animals, then you should try the Cage of Death at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Australia, where you can swim with crocodiles for fifteen minutes! Visitors climb into a cage made of glass walls that are four centimetres thick and are then lowered into a pool where an enormous 'croc' (six metres long and weighing eight hundred kilos) is waiting! It's an unforgettable experience and you'll be telling your friends about it for years to come.

A relaxing massage at a spa is the perfect way to chill out and escape the overcrowded tourist zones. However, this spa in northern Israel employs unusual staff members to give the massages: snakes! The owner, Ada Barack, asks clients to lie on the massage table and then drops six snakes onto their backs! Visitors say they expect the snakes to feel wet, but in fact they are cool, dry and smooth. You may feel a little tense at the beginning, but you'll be leaving the spa feeling more relaxed than you have in a long time!

Seeing the sights at the top of Mount Haushan in China is not for people who don't like heights! After climbing the hundreds of steep steps that are cut into the rock, visitors have to walk along the 'Changong Zhando'. This is the name given to the terrifying walk along two narrow pieces of wood on the side of the mountain which are only forty centimetres wide. There is just a seven-hundred-year-old chain handrail fixed into the rock to stop you from falling over two thousand metres to your death! You'll have lost a few kilos through exercise and worry by the time you reach the top!

______________________________________________________________________ It was during summer vacation from school. I was looking forward to visiting a new place, but it was my first time travelling alone, and I felt nervous.

Before landing in Hong Kong, I could see the whole city from the airplane. It was a huge island, and the buildings were so tall! Behind the city, I could see green mountains with no buildings on them at all. I also saw lots of different sized boats in the sea. It was excited to visit such an amazing-looking place.

My uncle was busy working the whole time, so I explored the city by myself. I took the ferry to Kowloon. The market there was incredible, and they sold everything you could possibly think of. I tired some local food, and the dumplings were my favorite. They were delicious.

One day, I took the tram up to the top of Victoria Peak above Hong Kong. I could see tall buildings everywhere I looked. There were two awesome skyscrapers on each side of the harbor, and ships were sailing between them. The view from the mountain top was spectacular!

On the last day, I went swimming at the beach. At first, I was terrified that there might be sharks. However, the lifeguard told me there was a big net in the sea to protect swimmers. After hearing that, I felt much more relaxed. I enjoyed swimming in the refreshing sea.

I had an amazing trip. I didn’t have much time to hang out with my uncle, but it was OK because I learned a lot about being independent. After returning home, I felt more confident about traveling to new places by myself.

Hi, everyone. It’s Kenny back with another blog. This time I want to tell you about a wonderful vacation I just heard. I had an amazing time at this eco-resort I stayed at called Bkue Sky Ecocamp in Malaysia.

I stayed at Blue Sky Ecocamp for my whole two-week vacation. It sounds crazy, but all the rooms are tents. I thought I would be too hot, but they’re made in a special way, so they stay cool. My tent was next to the beach. Every morning I woke up to breathtaking views of the ocean and the sound of waves. It was so relaxing.

I chose this resort because of how much it does for the local environment. First, they ask people to keep their energy use to a bare minimum. The tents don’t even have lights or electricity. They just have candles if you need to see at night. Next, all the food is from the local area or grown at the resort. If I wanted to eat a salad, I could walk into the garden and pick my own vegetables. It was the freshest, tastiest food I’ve ever had. Finally, they only hire people from the local area. The resort gives them hospitality training and teaches them a lot of really useful skills.

I did a lot of exciting activities while I was there, too. I went kayaking, and I learned about the local culture. I was even taken to a local sea turtle rescue center where they rescue, look after, and reintroduce sea turtles. It was an amazing day.

I highly recommend Blue Sky Ecocamp to anyone reading this. It’s my favorite resort I’ve stayed at, and I think you’d agree. So, If you visit the area, make sure to check out this resort.
