Cách nhận biết tính từ ngắn gồm:
Tính từ có một âm tiết. Ví dụ: bad, short, good,…
Tính từ có hai âm tiết kết thúc bằng –y, –le,–ow, –er, et. Ví dụ: sweet, clever,…
Các tính từ dài có từ ba âm tiết trở lên ví dụ: beautiful, intelligent, expensive,…
Cấu trúc so sánh hơn với tính từ ngắn : S + V + (Adj/Adv) + “-er” + than
Cấu trúc so sánh hơn với tính từ và trạng từ dài: S + V + more + Adj/Adv + than
Công thức so sánh nhất với tính từ ngắn: S + V + the + Adj/Adv + -est
Công thức so sánh nhất với tính từ và trạng từ dài: S + V + the + most + Adj/Adv
Công thức so sánh bằng: Khẳng định (positive): S + V + as + adj/adv + as + N/pronoun
Phủ định (negative): S + V + not + so/as + adj/adv +as+ N/Pronoun
Nếu tính từ có một âm tiết, kết thúc bằng một phụ âm, đứng trước phụ âm đó là một nguyên âm, thì phụ âm đó cần được nhân đôi trước khi thêm đuôi -er hoặc -est.
Nếu tính từ kết thúc bằng đuôi -e, bạn chi cần thêm -r hoặc -st.
Nếu tính từ kết thúc bằng đuôi -y, bạn cần đổi -y thành -i rồi mới thêm đuôi -er hoặc -est.
Các tính từ có hai âm tiết và kết thúc bằng đuôi -y, để tạo các dạng so sánh trong tiếng anh, bạn cần đổi đuôi –y thành -i rồi thêm -er hoặc -est.
Có một vài tính từ có dạng so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất bất quy tắc trong bảng so sánh dưới đây.
