Film records

The record books are full of great film trivia, but only gossip about stars is usually heard. I like the gossip, but what about the film trivia we aren't told about? Some film records are much more interesting. For example, did you know that Robert Downey Jr. was paid more than any other actor for his role as Iron Man in the Avengers films (the huge sum of eighty million US dollars)? And I bet you can’t guess which film has the record for the most tickets sold. I was amazed! Well, apparently more cinema tickets were sold for Gone with the Wind, a 1930s romance, than for any other film. I haven’t even seen it but it sounds terrible! The classic science fiction film Star Wars comes a close second, and I’m sure that it’s a much better movie.

One truly unbelievable film record was set by a man called Ashish Sharma in Mathura, India, in 2008. He sat in a cinema and watched films for an incredible 120 hours and twenty-three minutes – that’s forty-eight films in total.

Another film-related record from India is about the world’s largest film poster. It was made to advertise India’s biggest action film of 2015, Bãahubali. The size of it is extraordinary! At nearly 5,000 square metres, it’s more than half the size of a professional football pitch! It wasn’t made in the usual way. It was designed by the film’s director S. S. Rajamouli and it was made by a team of thirty people who worked around the clock for three days.

You’ve read the books, seen the films, now eat the cakes! The Edible Book Festival was started in 2000. It is held every year around 1st April. Chicken Soup for the Soul

I’d like to talk about a book I read recently called Chicken Soup for the Soul. It was written by two motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. They compiled the best 101 stories they were told in the book.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is a heartwarming and easy-to-read collection of true stories that inspire you to live your dreams. The stories demonstrate the best qualities that are shared as human beings: compassion, grace, forgiveness, generosity and faith.

The thing I like most about the book is the way I am taught to care for others, love myself, and overcome obstacles.

All in all, I’d recommend Chicken Soup for the Soul to people of all ages. It comprises inspirational stories that help spread happiness and hope throughout the society.

The book or the film?

The film was OK, but I enjoyed the book more. How often do you hear people say this as they're leaving the cinema? I have to admit, I've said it many times!

A. Over the years, I've tried to get excited about film adaptations of novels. And there have been lots of famous ones to choose from: The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as the massive hits, Twilight and Harry Potter.

B. Often the films are fantastic. A huge amount of money is spent on the special effects. They're nearly as amazing as the ones I imagine in my head, for free, when I read the book.

C. For me, this is the big difference between reading and watching a story. In a film, I'm shown someone else's idea of how the characters and the places look.

D. When I read, on the other hand, I share the hero's thoughts, and see the world the author describes. Reading is a creative activity. And there's only one thing that can prevent me from using my imagination: watching the film first!

E. So, I always download the book before watching the film. And while I might see the film weeks after my friends, I know I'll see a fascinating version of the story-in my own imagination-first.

Hay Festival                           13^th  JULY

I'd like to talk about a festival I went to recently. It's called Hay Festival, and it's held in Hay-on-Wye for ten days every May. Hay is an unusual town, with nearly thirty bookshops, and its festival is all about literature and the arts. Authors, journalists and political and cultural speakers are invited to give talks. During the festival, the town is visited by 250,000 people.

The festival was started around thirty years ago by a father and son. Recently, other international locations have been added, and there are now nine Hay Festivals around the world. The modern festival is a mixture of literature, films, music and children's events.

This year's festival starred comedians, world-famous novelists and great jazz acts. The thing I liked most about the festival was its relaxed atmosphere. All in all, I'd recommend Hay to anyone who loves reading and ideas.
