Anxiety is a feeling of worry or fear (18) _______, and scientists have discovered that these two are deeply connected. In the brain, the amygdala plays a key role by detecting danger and storing fear-related memories. It works closely with the prefrontal cortex, which helps regulate emotions. Depending on the situation, the prefrontal cortex may either amplify or reduce fear signals from the amygdala.

But anxiety isn’t just about what happens in the brain. (19) _______, like a racing heartbeat, sweating, or trembling. Interestingly, these bodily sensations can make anxiety worse. For example, (20) _______, you might think something is seriously wrong such as a heart attack. This misinterpretation of bodily signals can create a cycle of fear. This process, known as interoception, is how the brain keeps track of changes in the body, like breathing or muscle tension.

Research shows that people with anxiety disorders are especially sensitive to these internal signals. In one study, women with anxiety had their heart rates increased by a drug and felt much more anxious than those without anxiety.

Wildlife conservation is a crucial endeavor that aims to protect animal species and their habitats. This effort is essential for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring the health of our ecosystems. Human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change are some of the primary threats to wildlife. Conservation initiatives strive to mitigate these impacts through various strategies.

One significant aspect of wildlife conservation is the establishment of protected areas. National parks, wildlife reserves, and marine protected areas are created to provide safe havens for endangered species. These areas not only protect wildlife but also offer opportunities for scientific research and eco-tourism, which can benefit local economies.

Another important approach is the reintroduction of species into their natural habitats. This method has been successful in bringing several species back from the brink of extinction. Conservationists carefully monitor and support these reintroduced populations to ensure their survival.

Education and awareness campaigns play a pivotal role in wildlife conservation as well. By educating the public about the importance of biodiversity and the threats facing wildlife, these campaigns foster a sense of responsibility and encourage community involvement in conservation efforts.

Technological advancements are also aiding conservation efforts. Innovations such as satellite tracking, DNA analysis, and drone surveillance help researchers gather critical data and monitor wildlife populations more effectively. These tools enable more informed decision-making and efficient conservation strategies.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.

Altitude sickness is a condition that affects people who travel to high places, usually above 8,000 feet. This is why it is often called "mountain sickness." At high altitudes, the air pressure becomes lower, which means there is less oxygen in the air. As a result, the body receives less oxygen, and this causes the level of oxygen in the blood to drop. This change can lead to unpleasant symptoms and can make people feel unwell if their bodies do not adjust properly.

The symptoms of altitude sickness can vary from person to person. Common signs include headaches, feeling sick or dizzy, shortness of breath, and muscle aches. In most cases, the condition is not life-threatening, and many people start to feel better after a few days as their bodies slowly adjust to the new environment.

While medication is available to relieve symptoms, it is usually not necessary. The best way to avoid serious problems is to give the body time to get used to the change in altitude.

One surprising fact is that even very fit people, including professional athletes, can suffer from altitude sickness. Being strong or healthy does not protect someone from it. In fact, people who are extremely fit may be more likely to feel its effects. This seems strange, but experts believe it happens because fit individuals often push themselves too hard and move too quickly at high altitudes. Without allowing their bodies enough time to adapt, they become more vulnerable to the symptoms of altitude sickness.

The person most often credited with identifying and naming altitude sickness is the French scientist Paul Bert. In 1878, he published a well-known book that described the condition in detail. During the 18th and 19th centuries, many people became interested in mountain exploration and travelled to high and remote places. Explorers like Alexander von Humboldt and Horace-Bénédict de Saussure often wrote in their travel journals about the difficulty of breathing and moving at such heights. Their experiences helped bring attention to the effects of high-altitude environments.

However, more recent research suggests that another Frenchman, Denis Jourdanet, may have discovered altitude sickness even earlier than Paul Bert. [I] Jourdanet was a doctor who lived in several parts of Mexico, where he studied how different altitudes affected people’s health. He focused especially on how the thin air influenced his wife’s tuberculosis. [II] In 1859, he returned to Paris and published his findings, although his work received mixed responses at the time. [III] To his credit, Bert always recognised Jourdanet’s earlier contribution, but over time, many people forgot his role in the discovery of altitude sickness. [IV]
