When we think about teenagers, words like “rebellious,” “moody,” or “lazy” often come to mind. These traits are usually seen in a negative light, especially by adults. But in fact, such behaviors are simply the result of major changes happening in the teenage brain. In the past, people didn’t understand this well. Teenagers were often described as difficult or immature, when really, their actions were shaped by the stage of brain development they were going through.

In the last twenty years, new brain scanning technology has helped scientists better understand how teenage brains work. What they’ve discovered is both surprising and fascinating. Their research shows that many of our old ideas about teen behavior were incorrect. For example, scientists found that melatonin – the hormone that controls sleep – rises and falls later in teenagers. This explains why teens often feel tired in the morning. As a result, some high schools have changed their schedules to start later, and many teachers have noticed that students are now more alert and involved in class.

Teenagers also experience a rise in dopamine, a chemical that makes us feel excited and curious. This explains why many teens love trying new things and sometimes take risks. On top of that, their mood can change quickly because of other hormone shifts, like serotonin, and because their brains are more active during social situations. It’s important to remember that teens are going through many new experiences, and understanding these takes time and emotional energy.

Adults might say teenagers are being dramatic when they spend hours worrying about a friend who suddenly seems distant. But these moments are actually very important. They help teens build emotional intelligence and social skills that they will need as adults. Even though adulthood still feels far away, teenagers are already learning how to handle life’s challenges, one step at a time.

[I] It was then discovered by a trio of British divers while they were making the groundbreaking dive in 2009. [II] They discovered an underwater tunnel that connects Son Doong with another enormous cave called Thung Cave. [III] Son Doong first measured a total 38.5 million cubic meters.
